Past and Future
Reading the Handmaid’s Tale has been a vastly different experience than the past dystopian novels we’ve read in this class. Brave New World and 1984 are both futuristic nightmares. Each manipulates an aspect of what makes us human and twists it. However, the world in The Handmaid's Tale seems to reverse our progress as a society. People of color are referred to in biblical terms, and worst of all views on women have completely sunk. I don’t know if this makes the world worse than the futuristic nightmares, but it's certainly a terrifying one.
